Drug Trials

What is a Drug Trial?

A drug trial is a clinical research study conducted to test how safe and effective a drug is. There are two types of drug trials:

1. Established Drug Trial: This involves testing a drug that has already been approved and used for one condition but is now being tested for a different medical condition. These drugs have already been proven effective and are licensed by regulatory agencies such as the  Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) in the ROI or the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

2. New Drug Trial: This involves testing a new drug that is still in the approval process. It must undergo several phases of clinical trials before being approved by agencies like the HPRA or EMA.

Phases of Clinical Research Trials

Clinical trials typically follow a phased approach to evaluate a drug’s safety and effectiveness:

- Phases 1–3: These phases are focused on testing the safety and efficiency of a new drug or treatment. Drugs in these early phases are usually considered experimental and are not often covered by insurance.
- Phases 3–4: As the trial progresses into these phases, the focus shifts to establishing how effective the drug is.
- Phase 4: This phase occurs after the drug has been approved and is on the market. Monitoring is done to track the long-term safety and effectiveness of the drug in people who are already taking it. This could involve:
  - Monitoring patients using the new drug.
  - Comparing the effects of the new drug with those of existing treatments or with healthy volunteers.

Insurance Cover for Drug Trials

If you're participating in a drug trial, cover varies depending on the phase of the trial:

- Phases 1–Early Stage 3: These are experimental phases, and treatments during this time are usually not covered by insurance.
- Late Phase 3: Insurance may provide cover if the drug is no longer considered experimental.
- Phase 4: Cover is provided as long as your GP is aware of your participation and supports it.
- Established Drug Trials: These are covered, provided that your GP is aware and agrees with your participation.

Always make sure your GP is informed and supportive of your involvement in a drug trial.

Please note - You must inform us if you are participating in a drug trial so we can update your account accordingly.
